Periodontal Disease

Periodontal Disease, also known as Pyorrhea, is a condition caused by inflammation of the tissues surrounding the teeth, such as the gums, periodontal ligaments, cementum, and jawbone. If left untreated, the disease slowly damages these tissues, which can ultimately lead to tooth loss.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

  • Gums appear swollen and unusually red.
  • Caused by bacteria and plaque buildup in the mouth.
  • Gums start to recede, exposing the tooth roots.
  • There may be pus or fluid with an unpleasant odor.
  • The tissues surrounding the teeth are being damaged, leading to tooth instability.

Causes of Periodontal Disease

  • It is caused by bacteria that accumulate in food particles and tartar around the tooth roots near the gums.

  • The prolonged buildup of plaque leads to inflammation and infection.

How to Prevent and Treat Periodontal Disease

1. Maintain Oral Hygiene:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day.
  • Use dental floss to remove plaque from between the teeth.

2. Teeth Scaling:

  • Visit the dentist to have plaque and tartar removed.
  • Deep cleaning in the gum pockets (Scaling and Root Planing):
    • Thorough cleaning of the gum pockets and tooth roots.

3. Use of Antibiotics:

  • In some cases, the dentist may prescribe antibiotics to eliminate the infection.

4. Surgery:

  • For severe cases, gum surgery or bone grafting may be necessary.

5. Regular Dental Check-ups:

  • Visit the dentist every 6 months to prevent plaque and tartar buildup.
