Dentures

What are dentures?

Dentures are dental devices used to replace lost teeth, helping to restore chewing function, speaking ability, and boosting confidence in one’s smile. There are two main types of dentures:

  1. Fixed Dentures:

    • Cannot be removed.
    • Examples include dental implants and bridges.
    • They provide a natural feel and are more stable than removable options.
  2. Removable Dentures:

    • Can be taken in and out of the mouth.
    • May require some time to adjust and get used to.
    • Modern removable dentures are more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable.

    The lifespan of dentures

    • Dentures may need adjustments or reconditioning based on usage and changes in the mouth.
    • As you age, the structure inside the mouth may change, such as gum recession, which can cause dentures to become loose. This can affect chewing and may lead to irritation.
    • It is recommended to visit the dentist at least once a year to check the condition of the dentures.

    Adjusting to Dentures

    Adjustment Period

    • In the beginning, you may feel discomfort, such as difficulty speaking or chewing food.
    • The cheek and tongue muscles will gradually adjust to support the dentures.
    • Excessive salivation, a feeling of the tongue being crowded, or mild irritation are common in the initial phase.

    Recommendation:

    • If you experience significant irritation, it is recommended to visit the dentist for adjustments to the dentures.

    Caring for Dentures

    1. Removing and Inserting Dentures:

    • Handle with care as dentures are delicate and may break if dropped.

    2. Storing Dentures:

    • Do not let dentures dry out.
    • Soak them in clean water or a denture solution when not in use. Avoid hot water, as it can cause the dentures to lose their shape.

    3. Cleaning:

    • Brush dentures daily to remove food particles and bacterial buildup.
    • Denture cleaning solutions can help, but they cannot replace regular brushing.

    4. Oral Care:

    • Brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth every morning to stimulate circulation and reduce bacterial buildup.

    5. Repairing Dentures:

    • If dentures crack, chip, break, or become loose, visit the dentist immediately.
    • Do not attempt to adjust or repair dentures on your own, as this may cause further damage.
